You've heard of rags to riches. My story isn't too different except for the money part. I have Dyslexia. I always thought I was too smart for a neurobiological disorder because there were too many things I wanted to do in life, inability to write well wasn't going to hold me back. I just had to Graduate High School first. Telling you I struggled isn't a lie, school was very difficult. I'm sure I only graduated because mandator testing for graduation didn't exist back then. I was an overall “C” student. Nothing to be proud of in most families. I think I pulled it off because of math and science. In those areas I excelled by leaps and bounds helping balance my extreme deficit in English.
Writing is a part of everyday life, especially if you wish to rise from humble beginnings. This was before computers with programs that could help anyone write if they wished to. At the time I never considered college because I knew about how poor my writing skills really were. My first attempts to write my first novel at thirteen were, well... “Disastrous” might be the correct term.
Because I wanted to succeed, I knew I had to find a way to tackle this problem. It took many years, but I began to write well enough to be heard. I rose from labor to management in my work life. It was then I decided to take my writing more seriously. It started as a hobby, then I published as an Indie author. I didn't sell many copies of that manuscript. It didn't matter; I published a book. It was then got the writing bug.
I now have many ebooks to sell across several publishing platforms which have grown to paperbacks sold in brick-and-mortar stores. With the Audible platform, I now have several titles available as audiobooks as well. Some do better than others, but that's not the point really. I'm writing up a storm and getting them out there. That's what makes me smile on difficult days when I experienced a hard day at work. I'll check my daily sales. When I see a title sold in some state or in another county, I smile. The day doesn’t feel so weary any more. To know someone wanted to read what I daydreamed years earlier put that smile on my face. I accomplished something, of myself. And I have to say, the stories are pretty good too.
