An MIT mechanical engineer pairs up with a professional stunt driver for an unusual type of race. Both agreed to drive a new type of automobile in an illegal cross-country race to test new technologies where the winner would gain unprecedented fame and become rich over new contracts to replace the aging ideas of the combustion engine. This race is an engineer's dream. Like building robots to fight in an arena for supremacy over their knowledge of new technological designs and mastery of robotics, the auto industry equates similar processes in car racing. But the the hold of the internal combustion engine and fossil fuels refuse to let go. In an act of rebellious ego driven billionaire entrepreneurship, the most influential of them organize this race to break the hold of the combustion engine with teams introducing new wild non fossil fueled combustion ideas.
Originally designed as a car race by billionaires to make money, one decided to make money on the race itself instead of entering a team and organizes a secret televised viewing where high stakes betting is encouraged. All the race teams are given a laser powerful enough to disable an opponent to keep the race interesting to the gamblers while a fleet of nondescript trucks follow each car with a camera crew. With betting on the table, the mob gets involved forcing the stakes up through the roof. Hit men and gangs are conscripted to trim the contestants out of the race to favor the richest gambler. The poor racers, unbeknownst to this high stakes game, are picked off one by one until the most resilient are left. That's when the weapons come out.
Katrina Meservier, the engineer, and Richard Bertrand, the driver, should be in sync to pilot the most advanced automobile on the planet across the U.S. but from the moment the starting flag dropped they were at each other's throats. What was supposed to be a quiet invisible race across the country to test new technologies turned out to be a race to see who would stay alive long enough to reach the finish line. When the bullets started coming their way, their special skills blossomed bringing out a new appreciation for the other. With the mob, gangs, and hitmen after them, together they became unstoppable.
Hidden in plain sight for more than twenty million years, an artifact passes as an old magic trick people rarely pay attention to for more than five minutes. One week a year the entity within the artifact comes to life. During those seven days a newly appointed victim is put through trials designed to either better themselves or see them fail. It is a deadly game the entity plays for entertainment.
During this reiteration of humanoids to walk the Earth, religion plays a huge role in daily life. People may not pray in the streets anymore, but in terms of history, religion is deeply embedded into daily life whether we modern humans understand it or not. As a result, this artifact has been accused of being an angel during his many interactions with mankind. Using religion as a vehicle, the angel presents himself as a figure of religious association to garner his next victim’s trust. Make no mistake, the entity is not an angel.
In the year 1976, Michael McDonald was chosen to become the next victim. But this year there’s a catch. The entity inside needs a new host to interact with his yearly victims. His time is almost up. The bodies he absorbs last only 2000 years, this year is 1999. This particular year the angel needs something from Michael just as much as Michael needs something from the angel.
As an orphan until the age of five, Michael has no memory of his time before he was adopted and is desperate to rediscover it. The angel promises to show Michael’s past under the guise of being helpful, hoping to take him as a new symbiotic vehicle after fulfilling his end of the bargain. Each had an agenda. Each had power over the other. In a year where everything was on the line, would the entity last long enough to conscribe Michael for two thousand years or would he turn to dust before Michael understood his complicated history and disappear forever?
After living robots fell from the sky and begun the destruction of the human race, man attempted to rally and destroy them. Man’s destructive weapons were no match against such advanced alien technology. Mankind quickly fell before the greater power. These aliens did not try to ask to speak to our leaders, order that we change our dystopian society, or demand all our magnets. Resolute silence for their presence mystified everyone.
Owen Carr, a lucky survivor of the war, placed in an endless line since he had been caught, thought that the survivors would be fitted with a god type collar that would make everyone follow orders and be slaves to the machine, however, something else occurred to focus robot eyes solely upon him. The long line led him towards a room where humans entered but never left.
Once inside, the realization of the robots presence became clear. It appeared that they were removing the consciousness of individuals in the line to insert their own machine code inside the newly vacant body. Upon seeing this, Owen didn't cry out for his life like all the others. He screamed out the question of "Why?" Nothing made any sense. He didn’t plan on surviving to receive an answer to his question. But surprisingly he did.
Gwendon the Robot recognized that Owen didn't beg for his life like all the others. Instead he asked to learn the reason for the madness and pulled him out. Their startling conversation afterwards, is so fantastic that it could not have been believed if it came before the war. What Owen unwittingly started by asking "Why" could only be thought of as a revelation of what our future held if the living robots had not arrived when they did.
An autobiographical reflection against the curtain of real life. With Covid -19 pushing us all into quarantine I stew over the sanity we are forced to accept when told to stay at home against our will. Accessing current times against what may occur in the coming weeks or months, I brood over available protections from the virus and the consistent lack of leadership from the oval office. Self-deprecation over our state of the state and my fears of what may come, I provide humorous commentary about what may never come to pass.
